Founded in 1939 by the visionary educationist and civil servant Rebati Raman Dutta, Sir Asutosh College in Kanungopara, Boalkhali, stands as a historic beacon of higher education in rural Chittagong. Built under the auspices of the Kanungopara Education Society, the institution was named in honor of Dutta’s revered teacher and Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Sir Asutosh Mukherjee. Established with a profound commitment to enlightening rural communities, the college rapidly expanded its academic horizons, introducing a science department in 1945 and offering honors programs despite early disruptions from World War II and the 1943 famine. Renowned as Chittagong’s first and largest private college of its time, its grand infrastructure, lush campus, and commitment to accessible learning transformed the local educational landscape. Over the decades, the college attracted distinguished luminaries, including Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Nellie Sen Gupta, Begum Sufia Kamal, and Dr. Qudrat-i-Khuda, solidifying its legacy as a pivotal seat of learning.
Sir Asutosh Govt. College emerged from the visionary determination of Rebati Raman Dutta, a brilliant scholar and civil servant who firmly believed that rural upliftment was impossible without widespread access to education. Driven by this noble philosophy, Dutta, alongside local social workers, formed the 'Kanungopara Education Society' in the early 1930s to establish educational institutions ranging from primary to higher levels in his native village. This vision culminated in the founding of Sir Asutosh College in 1939, named in honor of his esteemed mentor and former Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Sir Asutosh Mukherjee. Academic operations officially commenced on August 14, 1939, with a inaugural logic class taught by Shyamapada Babu, even before the completion of the main building. As Chittagong’s first and largest private college at the time, its expansive campus, serene ponds, and grand architecture quickly turned it into a remarkable landmark, proving that higher education could flourish beyond urban centers.
The legacy of Sir Asutosh College is deeply rooted in its historic role as a pioneer of rural higher education in Chittagong. From hosting global intellectuals, eminent scientists, and national leaders—such as Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Begum Sufia Kamal, and Dr. Qudrat-i-Khuda—to overcoming the historical hurdles of World War II, the institution has long stood as a symbol of academic resilience and community empowerment. Today, as a nationalized government institution (Sir Asutosh Government College), it continues to build upon this prestigious foundation. Looking toward the future, the college aims to honor the vision of its founder, Rebati Raman Dutta, by continually modernizing its academic infrastructure, expanding honors and postgraduate disciplines, and integrating modern technology into learning.
